Analyzing Transformer Designs Using COMSOL Multiphysics®

Transformer design is an integral aspect of the power & energy industry. Design requirements for transformers include the winding layout, such as the turn ratio, flux leakage, and insulation coordination; core design, such as the losses, cooling, and core noise; and auxiliary parts like tanks and bushings.

Multiphysics couplings (for example, electromagnetic fields and electric currents with heat transfer, solid mechanics, fluid flow, and acoustics) can be used to accurately predict transformer performance in real-world power & energy applications. In this video, we discuss how to use COMSOL Multiphysics® and the AC/DC Module to perform multiphysics analyses of transformer device designs.

We begin with an introduction to the design requirements of a typical transformer device, then move on to discuss the relevant multiphysics couplings for this type of analysis. Then, we give a step-by-step demonstration of modeling a single-phase transformer in COMSOL Multiphysics®.
