Introduction to the Battery Design Module
The COMSOL Multiphysics®software and the Battery Design Module, an add-on product, provide capabilities for describing batteries and electrochemical cells. Here, we will discuss the features and functionality of the Battery Design Module, followed by a quick demonstration of how to couple theLumped Batteryinterface with theHeat Transfer in Solidsinterface to build an electrothermal model.
Features and Functionality
The Battery Design Module expands the functionality and features available for battery modeling, design, and analysis in COMSOL Multiphysics®. The following archived presentation gives an introduction to the module and its various important features and capabilities and presents several tutorial models that demonstrate its use.
Watch the video to learn more about the software's capabilities for modeling batteries across different scales, from individual cells to entire packs. You'll get an overview of the key features and modeling workflow and learn how to use them in a model. Specifically, we will highlight the multiphysics capabilities for coupling electrochemistry with heat transfer to investigate thermal management of battery cells and packs.
Demo: Thermal Modeling of a Lithium-Ion Battery
Thermal management is critical for safety and ensuring long battery lifetimes. With theThermal Modeling of a Cylindrical Lithium-Ion Battery in 2Dtutorial model, we will simulate an air-cooled cylindrical 18650 lithium-ion battery during a charge–discharge cycle, followed by a relaxing period. TheLumped Batteryinterface is used to model the battery cell chemistry, and theHeat Transfer in Solidsinterface is used to model the temperature in the battery in a 2D axisymmetric geometry. The two models are coupled by the generated heat source and the average temperature using theElectrochemical Heatingmultiphysics coupling.
